Can patients with oral mucositis eat raw oysters?
Disease description:
My mouth has been locally red for the past two days, and I’ve also developed oral ulcers. My doctor diagnosed this as oral mucositis. Can I eat oysters when I have oral mucositis?
Patients with oral mucositis should generally avoid consuming raw oysters. Oral mucositis may cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, and heat in the mouth; in severe cases, ulcers may develop. Raw oysters may harbor parasites, and consuming them during an episode of oral mucositis could irritate the oral mucosa and exacerbate symptoms. Patients with oral mucositis should maintain good oral hygiene in daily life—rinsing the mouth frequently and keeping the oral cavity clean and hygienic.
