Disease description:

Recently, I’ve been doing heavy physical labor, which has caused injury to the soft tissues around my ribs, accompanied by swelling. I’m unsure whether this swelling is due to the soft tissue injury. Therefore, I’d like to ask: Can a soft tissue injury around the ribs cause swelling?

Dr. Lin Yunfei
Rib cage soft tissue injury may lead to edema. Such injury can impair local blood circulation and easily cause rupture of surrounding capillaries, resulting in localized congestion, swelling, and edema. Moreover, if the injury is severe, it may also damage the periosteum of the ribs, further contributing to edema. Patients are advised to follow their physician’s recommendations and apply warm compresses to help alleviate symptoms.
