Is low testosterone in a young girl a sign of precocious puberty?
Recently, I took my child to the hospital for hormone testing, and the results showed low testosterone levels. I would like to know: Does low testosterone in girls indicate precocious puberty?
A low testosterone level in a young girl is not indicative of precocious puberty. If a girl does experience precocious puberty, symptoms may include gradual breast enlargement, the onset of pubic hair growth, and early onset of menstruation. Testosterone levels are primarily used to assess whether boys have precocious puberty; although testosterone is also present in females, its concentration is significantly lower than in males and has minimal influence on female sexual development. Low testosterone in young girls may result from chronic malnutrition, excessive psychological stress, thyroid dysfunction, or other endocrine disorders. It is advisable to avoid feeding children foods with excessively high phytoestrogen content, as these may disrupt normal hormonal secretion.
