Can a four-dimensional (4D) prenatal ultrasound detect cerebral palsy?
Disease description:
My grandfather has cerebral palsy; I’m concerned about the possibility of genetic transmission. Can a four-dimensional (4D) prenatal ultrasound detect cerebral palsy?
No, it cannot. The purpose of Down syndrome screening is to assess whether there are any abnormalities—particularly intellectual disabilities. Fetal anomalies can also be diagnosed using 4D ultrasound. Four-dimensional ultrasound is a primary diagnostic modality capable of visualizing all fetal organs and is widely used for fetal anomaly screening. Currently, cerebral palsy does not produce characteristic or significant changes on prenatal ultrasound imaging; therefore, definitive diagnosis relies on postnatal neonatal examination.
