Clotrimazole cream, commonly used for vaginitis, may cause allergic reactions as a side effect. For candidal (fungal) vaginitis or vulvar fungal infection, clotrimazole cream may be applied topically—but it should not be used long-term. In cases of candidal vaginitis, clotrimazole vaginal suppositories or clotrimazole vaginal tablets are appropriate for intravaginal use; however, clotrimazole cream is unsuitable for prolonged systemic (e.g., oral) administration. Patients are advised to use medications only when clinically indicated and to avoid indiscriminate or unnecessary drug use in the absence of disease.
