I’ve recently experienced vulvar itching, and my doctor diagnosed me with acute vulvitis and acute vaginitis. What is the difference between the acute and chronic forms?

Acute vulvitis initially presents with vulvar discomfort, followed by pruritus, pain, a burning sensation, and, in severe cases, eczema, urinary frequency, and dysuria. Chronic vulvitis manifests directly as persistent vulvar pruritus, sudden thickening and roughening of the vulvar skin, and dysuria. Another form of acute vulvitis occurs within three months; however, if inadequately treated, it may progress to chronic vulvitis. Although symptoms are similar, they vary depending on disease duration. Regardless of whether the condition is mild or severe, chronic or acute, identifying and addressing the underlying cause is essential for effective treatment. Only by pinpointing the specific etiology can targeted therapy be implemented.
