How to Determine Whether a Dorsal Foot Sprain Involves Soft Tissue Injury or a Fracture
Disease description:
Over the past two days, I accidentally sprained the top of my foot while sprinting, resulting in pain across the dorsum of the foot. A friend suggested this might be due to soft-tissue injury. How can one distinguish between soft-tissue injury and a fracture following a sprain of the dorsal foot?
If you sustain a sprain on the top of your foot, you can determine whether it involves soft tissue injury or a fracture based on the following signs:
- If, after the sprain, you experience pain and swelling over the dorsum of the foot, localized redness, and only mild functional impairment during normal movement, this likely indicates a soft tissue injury.
- Conversely, if you develop pain on the dorsum of the foot and subsequently find yourself unable to bear weight or walk normally—such as exhibiting an abnormal gait—this may suggest a fracture.
