Is generalized pruritus a sign of AIDS?
Disease description:
Since last night, I’ve been experiencing itching all over my body, and there’s no effective way to relieve it. I’d like to ask: Is generalized itching a sign of HIV/AIDS?
Generalized pruritus (itching) can be a sign of HIV/AIDS, but not all cases of generalized itching are caused by HIV/AIDS. After the virus invades the patient’s immune system, generalized itching may occur—often accompanied by other symptoms such as generalized pain or malaise, weight loss, diarrhea, and nausea. However, generalized itching may also result from non-HIV-related conditions, such as skin allergies or contact dermatitis. More serious underlying disorders—including hyperglycemia (e.g., uncontrolled diabetes) or hepatic or renal disease—can also manifest with generalized pruritus.
