Is hepatitis C contagious?
Disease description:
My colleague has recently been experiencing generalized weakness and abdominal pain. Hospital tests diagnosed hepatitis C. Is hepatitis C contagious?
Hepatitis C is contagious. The primary transmission routes of hepatitis C are blood transfusion, mother-to-child transmission, and sexual contact. Hepatitis C is a viral hepatitis caused predominantly by infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Its clinical manifestations include generalized fatigue, anorexia, and right upper quadrant abdominal pain. Hepatitis C is second only to hepatitis B in terms of transmissibility and is therefore classified as a Category B notifiable infectious disease. However, no transmission occurs through routine daily contact.
