Hello, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) using cell-free fetal DNA (cfDNA) is a screening test for chromosomal abnormalities—similar to the traditional Down syndrome screening—and requires a fasting blood draw. However, NIPT is performed between 12 and 24 weeks of gestation and offers higher accuracy than conventional serum screening, with detection rates exceeding 90%. Pregnant women aged 35 years or older, those with borderline or high-risk results on conventional Down syndrome screening, those with a prior pregnancy involving a chromosomal abnormality, or those who have previously given birth to a child with Down syndrome are advised to skip conventional Down syndrome screening and proceed directly to NIPT or amniocentesis. We hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!
