Can ordinary medical masks prevent tuberculosis?
Disease description:
During a company-organized group health examination, a colleague was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. Due to the pandemic, I have been wearing a mask at work throughout my shifts—could I have been infected? Can standard medical masks prevent pulmonary tuberculosis?
Wearing a mask can effectively prevent tuberculosis (TB). Patients with TB should take appropriate protective measures, including wearing masks and cleaning and disinfecting objects they have contacted. Whether TB is transmitted depends primarily on an individual’s immune status; individuals with strong immunity are unlikely to become infected—especially children and the elderly, whose immune systems tend to be weaker.
