My daughter has had a cold for the past few days—she’s been sniffling and tearing up; it’s truly miserable. Why do children with colds experience runny noses and watery eyes?

After a cold, if nasal discharge and tearing occur, it is important to promptly visit a hospital for a complete blood count (CBC) to rule out localized inflammation, which can help alleviate symptoms of tearing and rhinorrhea. During episodes of tearing, avoid letting the infant rub their eyes with dirty hands to prevent worsening of the condition. It is recommended that the child get adequate rest, drink plenty of fluids, consume light and bland foods, and maintain a regular daily routine.
