The typical course of the illness is 5–7 days. Viral infections are self-limiting, usually resolving spontaneously within 5–7 days; therefore, this common cold in infants resolves on its own over 5–7 days without requiring intervention. However, if coughing or cold symptoms are severe—especially in newborns, whose respiratory immune function is immature—they are highly susceptible to lower respiratory tract infections. In such cases, prominent symptoms may include cough, sputum production, respiratory distress (e.g., choking or apnea), and pulmonary inflammation. Under these circumstances, treatment duration may be prolonged, typically lasting approximately 7–10 days; severe pulmonary inflammation may require up to about 14 days of treatment.
