What should I do if my baby’s creatine kinase isoenzyme level is elevated?
Disease description:
The child recently recovered from a cold, but today’s hospital examination revealed elevated creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) levels. The parents would like to know how to address the elevated CK-MB in their baby.
This condition is typically caused by cardiac injury; therefore, it is essential to evaluate whether there are any underlying cardiac issues and whether further diagnostic tests—such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) and serum troponin assay—are warranted. If troponin levels exceed the upper limit of normal by more than two-fold, this is likely indicative of myocardial injury. Additionally, consider whether the child has had a recent cold, respiratory infection, or diarrhea. A history of such illnesses significantly increases the likelihood of myocardial injury.
