Can administering growth hormone cause precocious puberty?
Disease description:
My child previously received one dose of growth hormone, and I’m somewhat concerned—could administering growth hormone lead to precocious puberty?
This condition may occur, so parents should closely monitor their children and seek prompt medical attention if any abnormalities are observed. There are two types of precocious puberty: central precocious puberty and peripheral precocious puberty. Central precocious puberty indicates a lesion in the pituitary gland or hypothalamus and is mostly caused by true gonadotropin-dependent puberty initiation. Peripheral precocious puberty—often termed “pseudo-precocious puberty”—is primarily triggered by exposure to sex hormones or obesity. In such cases, halting further exposure to sex hormones typically arrests pubertal development.
