Is it normal for a child to begin puberty at age nine?
Disease description:
My child is 9 years old this year. Recently, I’ve noticed that he’s growing unusually fast in height, and there are also signs of breast development. I’d like to ask: Is it normal for a child to begin puberty at age 9?
It varies from person to person: in boys, it is abnormal, whereas in girls, it is a normal phenomenon. Generally, the onset of pubertal development before age 8 in girls or before age 9 in boys is considered abnormal and classified as precocious puberty. Currently, in boys, signs such as testicular enlargement, penile enlargement, pubic hair growth, penile erections, ejaculation, facial acne, or voice changes are considered abnormal and indicative of precocious puberty. In such cases, a bone age X-ray should be performed to confirm whether true precocious puberty is present; if confirmed, appropriate intervention is warranted. In contrast, pubertal development beginning at age 9 in girls is a normal physiological phenomenon and is often accompanied by significant changes in body weight and height during childhood growth.
