Will mouth ulcers recur after healing?
Disease description:
Recently, my daughter developed mouth ulcers. Since she is only two years old, she cried and fussed intensely. Lately, her symptoms seem to have improved—she cries much less—but I’m still a bit concerned. So I’d like to ask: After oral ulcers heal, can they recur?
Yes. Recurrent oral ulcers are a highly recurrent condition; if daily dietary habits are not carefully managed, the recurrence rate is approximately 80%. In addition to frequent recurrence, oral ulcers are characteristically self-limiting—requiring no specific treatment—and typically resolve spontaneously within one to two weeks. However, they are difficult to eradicate completely. When oral ulcers persist chronically without resolution, paralysis must be ruled out. To enable prompt symptomatic treatment, the underlying cause must be identified as soon as possible.
