Can a newborn with intestinal gas sleep prone on the mother’s body?
Disease description:
My newborn baby developed intestinal gas shortly after birth. He frequently cries and fusses while trying to sleep on his own, and only falls asleep when lying face-down on his mother’s chest. Therefore, I’d like to ask: Is it safe for a newborn with intestinal gas to sleep in the prone position (face-down) on the mother’s chest?
Newborns with intestinal gas may sleep prone on their mother’s body, but this should be determined based on the individual situation. Because newborns’ gastrointestinal functions are not yet fully developed, they are prone to intestinal gas. If the condition is mild, sleeping prone on the mother’s body may be appropriate—this position can provide a sense of security and promote better sleep. However, if the gas accumulation is severe, lying prone on the mother is not recommended, as it may impair gastrointestinal motility and hinder normal gas exchange.
