Recently, I noticed hyperpigmentation of the oral mucosa while looking in the mirror. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, I was diagnosed with oral acanthosis nigricans. What systemic diseases can oral acanthosis nigricans be associated with?
Oral mucosal acanthosis nigricans may lead to elevated blood glucose levels; persistent hyperglycemia can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes.
