Nabothian cysts of the cervix—also clinically referred to as cervical glandular cysts—are a common manifestation of chronic cervicitis, alongside cervical erosion and cervical polyps. Typically, during the healing process of cervical erosion, newly formed squamous epithelium may cover the openings of cervical glands or grow into the glandular ducts, potentially obstructing them. Additionally, fibrous connective tissue proliferation or scar formation around the glandular ducts may compress and narrow the ducts—sometimes leading to complete obstruction—thereby impeding drainage of glandular secretions and resulting in their accumulation and subsequent cyst formation. Clinically, such cysts are termed Nabothian cysts. Under prolonged inflammatory stimulation, a small number of these cysts may exhibit malignant potential; thus, close clinical monitoring is warranted.
