Why does metabolic alkalosis cause hypokalemia?
Disease description:
I’ve been feeling unusually drowsy over the past two days. After examination, my doctor diagnosed me with hypokalemia, attributing it to metabolic alkalosis. Why does metabolic alkalosis cause hypokalemia?
Metabolic alkalosis-induced hypokalemia may result from factors such as a relatively low extracellular hydrogen ion concentration. When intracellular and extracellular ion balance is disturbed, hydrogen ions exchange with potassium ions across the cell membrane. Specifically, intracellular hydrogen ions move out of the cell, while extracellular hydrogen ions continuously enter the cell, disrupting cellular ion homeostasis and thereby contributing to hypokalemia.
