Sleeping with the mouth open may be caused by turbinate hypertrophy or nasal congestion. If it results from significant turbinate hypertrophy, endoscopic sinus surgery can be performed to correct the condition and prevent interference with daily life—untreated cases may even lead to adenoid facies. If nasal congestion is the cause, patients may improve symptoms by applying warm compresses (using a warm towel) to the nasal area.
