Disease description:

Recently, I’ve been feeling unwell and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at the hospital. At home, I usually share utensils (e.g., bowls and chopsticks) with my family, and I’m worried about possible transmission. Can hyperthyroidism be transmitted through sharing utensils?

Hyperthyroidism is not an infectious disease, and no transmission occurs even when multiple individuals are affected simultaneously. The development of hyperthyroidism is associated with various factors, including immune dysfunction, emotional stress, and environmental influences. As an endocrine disorder, hyperthyroidism results from abnormal hormone secretion and has no route of transmission. However, it does exhibit a certain degree of heritability. If a pregnant woman’s hyperthyroidism is poorly controlled during pregnancy, it may affect the fetus via the umbilical cord; consequently, the newborn may display signs of hyperthyroidism.
