How to Reduce Foot Swelling in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Disease description:
A friend of my mother’s has type 2 diabetes. Recently, I noticed that her feet were swollen and would like to ask: How can swelling in the feet of patients with type 2 diabetes be reduced?
Most cases of foot swelling in type 2 diabetes result from complications such as diabetic nephropathy or foot infections. In advanced stages of diabetic nephropathy, hypertension and declining kidney function may develop, leading to edema. This condition can be managed by increasing protein intake and administering diuretic medications to reduce swelling. Additionally, diabetic foot syndrome itself can cause foot edema; when edema is accompanied by pain, analgesics may be used for symptom relief, while strict glycemic control is essential to prevent worsening of diabetic foot complications.
