Digoxin is generally not recommended for hypercalcemia. Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside that enhances myocardial contractility and slows heart rate and conduction; it is indicated for atrial fibrillation and chronic heart failure. However, in patients with hypercalcemia, digoxin use may increase the risk of life-threatening arrhythmias—including bradycardia, other arrhythmias, and ventricular fibrillation—and is therefore contraindicated. Treatment of hypercalcemia typically involves hydration, diuretics (e.g., furosemide), bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate), calcitonin, and, in severe cases, dialysis—all under strict medical supervision.
