Why do the whites of the eyes turn yellow?
Disease description:
When you look in the mirror in the morning, you notice that the whites of your eyes appear yellow. Why do the whites of the eyes turn yellow?
Yellowing of the sclera (the “white” of the eye) may result from jaundice caused by liver or biliary tract diseases, hemolytic disorders, or systemic infections. In addition, chronic allergic conjunctivitis may also cause yellowish discoloration of the sclera. Patients should avoid known allergens and, under physician guidance, receive local anti-allergic treatment—including topical corticosteroid eye drops or ointments, antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, and preservative-free artificial tears.
