Is Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy (AFLP) severe?
Disease description:
After giving birth to my first child, I gained significant weight and developed fatty liver disease. Now I’m pregnant with my second child—how serious is fatty liver disease during pregnancy?
Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a serious condition, particularly when severe. If this idiopathic disorder occurs in the third trimester, it typically has an abrupt onset and may lead to preterm delivery or intrauterine fetal demise.
In cases of mild or moderate fatty liver during pregnancy, dietary modifications are recommended—specifically, avoiding high-fat foods—and incorporating appropriate physical activity, such as walking or prenatal yoga, which may help alleviate symptoms. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is also advised to facilitate early detection and prevention of complications.
