Why Does Strabismus Occur in Young Children?
Disease description:
My nephew is 1 year old. To enhance his coordination, I played a ball-catching game with him and noticed that his eyes were misaligned—he consistently failed to catch the ball. I suspect he may have strabismus. What causes strabismus in young children?
Pediatric strabismus arises from factors such as underdeveloped visual function, congenital abnormalities, and abnormal ocular development. In infants, visual development is incomplete, and the extraocular muscles cannot coordinate effectively. Any destabilizing factor may trigger strabismus. Excessive maternal exertion during childbirth can elevate fetal intracranial pressure, leading to punctate cerebral hemorrhages in newborns. When children focus on objects, their eyes must converge inward; excessive convergence may result in esotropia.
