There is generally a risk of progression to pneumonia. When affected by this condition, individuals may experience shortness of breath and severe dyspnea, along with copious amounts of sputum or purulent secretions. These secretions can drain down the throat into the bronchi or lungs, triggering pulmonary inflammation. Pathogens such as viruses and bacteria may invade the lungs, causing pulmonary infection and consequently weakening the body’s immune defenses.
