What causes glaucoma?
Disease description:
No one else in my family has glaucoma—only I do. I would like to understand the underlying cause of my glaucoma.
Glaucoma is generally associated with genetic factors and unhealthy habits. This condition falls into several categories:
- **Primary glaucoma**, which has a polygenic inheritance pattern;
- **Congenital glaucoma**, resulting from abnormal embryonic development and congenital structural variations of the anterior chamber angle;
- **Secondary glaucoma**, caused by other ocular disorders or systemic diseases that impair normal aqueous humor circulation.
Since glaucoma is a progressive disease—meaning it continues to worsen if left untreated—prompt and appropriate management is essential to halt or at least delay disease progression.
