Hyperthyroidism is generally not contagious. It is a chronic, organ-specific autoimmune disorder with a strong genetic predisposition; the risk of developing the condition among siblings is 11.6%. Concordance rates are high among monozygotic twins, indicating that hyperthyroidism is a complex polygenic disease. Blood tests can confirm the presence of multiple thyroid-related autoantibodies. Environmental factors also contribute to the development of hyperthyroidism, including sex hormone levels and psychological stress.
