I have been suffering from hypokalemia for a long time. Recently, I frequently experience generalized weakness and profound muscle fatigue. Could you please explain the underlying cause of muscle weakness in hypokalemia?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Pan Yongyuan
Hypokalemic Muscle Weakness Patients with severe hyperthyroidism may develop periodic paralysis, characterized by hypokalemia and consequent muscle weakness, rendering them unable to move. As serum potassium levels gradually rise, symptoms typically improve significantly; however, recurrence is common, necessitating targeted treatment of the underlying hyperthyroidism. Additionally, prolonged inadequate dietary potassium intake can also lead to hypokalemia; severe deficiency may markedly impair muscle strength.
