Today, my child experienced some pain while cleaning their ears, and I’m worried that the eardrum might have been injured. Is the eardrum visible to the naked eye?

The eardrum is not visible to the naked eye. When viewed externally, only its posterior aspect can be seen—typically, the eardrum itself remains invisible. Moreover, the external auditory canal often contains cerumen (earwax) debris, which primarily serves a protective function for the canal; however, this cerumen may obstruct the view of the eardrum. Therefore, the external auditory canal must be thoroughly cleaned before examination. The optimal method for examining the eardrum is otoscopy using an otoscope with video imaging: the eardrum is magnified on a display screen, allowing exceptionally clear visualization of its anatomical structures.
