Can I still sing classical (bel canto) voice with vocal cord nodules?
Disease description:
I’m a classical singer in an orchestra. Recently, I’ve been experiencing throat discomfort, and after examination, I was diagnosed with vocal nodules. Can I still sing classical (opera-style) repertoire with vocal nodules?
Vocal cord nodules preclude singing in the bel canto style. The above-mentioned conditions are forms of chronic laryngitis, most commonly caused by prolonged and excessive vocal strain. Once these conditions develop, patients must avoid speaking and refrain from singing. Active pharmacological treatment is essential; concurrent nebulized inhalation therapy may also be employed. If medical management proves ineffective, surgical intervention becomes necessary. Postoperatively, patients must exercise caution when using their voice to prevent recurrence of vocal cord nodules.
