Is fasting required for anemia testing?
Disease description:
Recently, my complexion has been somewhat pale, and I feel slightly dizzy when standing up quickly. A friend suggested that I might have anemia. I’d like to know whether fasting is required for anemia testing.
If only a complete blood count (CBC) is performed to evaluate anemia, fasting is not strictly required. However, to enhance the accuracy of the test results, it is advisable to conduct the CBC while fasting. Patients with anemia may exhibit symptoms such as pallor and dizziness or visual disturbances—classic signs of iron-deficiency anemia—making fasting before CBC testing particularly recommended. This is especially important for individuals suspected of having anemia, as fasting helps identify the underlying cause of anemia and enables targeted, effective treatment.
