Why Do Babies’ Lips Turn Purple?
Disease description:
I just went to the bathroom, and when I returned, I noticed my child’s lips had turned bluish-purple. I hadn’t paid particular attention to this before—could you please tell me what might be causing this?
A baby’s lips may appear bluish-purple under dim lighting conditions or when exposed to purple ambient lighting, which can create the visual impression of cyanosis. However, this discoloration may also indicate a respiratory infection; in such cases, lip cyanosis is often accompanied by tachypnea (increased respiratory rate) and signs of respiratory distress. Additionally, congenital heart disease cannot be ruled out. We recommend consulting a healthcare provider and undergoing an echocardiogram to confirm or exclude this diagnosis.
