What Are Some Kidney-Tonifying and Yang-Enhancing Herbal Formulas?
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve been experiencing soreness and weakness in my lower back and knees, along with a slight intolerance to cold. My doctor suggested taking some kidney-tonifying and yang-invigorating herbal formulas. Could you please recommend some commonly used prescriptions for tonifying the kidneys and strengthening yang?
For tonifying the kidneys and strengthening yang, one may select the herbal formula “Shen Qi Wan” (Rehmannia Eight Formula), which contains processed Rehmannia root (Shu Di Huang), Alisma rhizome (Ze Xie), Chinese yam (Shan Yao), and Cassia twig (Gui Zhi), among other herbs. It is particularly effective in alleviating symptoms such as clear, copious urination and low back pain with weak, sore legs. Alternatively, “You Gui Wan” (Right-Returning Pill) may be chosen; it comprises Angelica root (Dang Gui), Cinnamon bark (Rou Gui), Goji berries (Gou Qi Zi), and processed Rehmannia root (Shu Di Huang), among others. Clinically, You Gui Wan functions to warm and tonify kidney yang and nourish essence and replenish marrow, thereby effectively relieving symptoms associated with kidney yang deficiency.
