Disease description:

My nephew has contracted rubella virus. I’ve just found out that I’m pregnant, and my husband asked me to get tested. The test result came back negative for rubella virus—what does this mean?

A negative rubella virus test result indicates that the patient has never been infected with rubella in the past and currently shows no evidence of rubella virus infection. For instance, if antibodies are being tested, it means no rubella-specific antibodies were detected in the body. However, if the patient is later exposed to an individual with rubella, infection remains possible. If concerned, vaccination is recommended to prevent rubella infection.
