How Are Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Contracted?
Disease description:
A girl in my dormitory told me she has a sexually transmitted infection (STI). I’ve only heard a little about STIs before, but I don’t know how they’re contracted—could you please explain?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are primarily acquired through sexual contact—particularly unsafe sexual practices, such as having multiple sexual partners or engaging in chaotic sexual behavior—and currently represent a major route of widespread transmission in society. STIs may also be contracted via blood transfusions, blood products, or sexual organ transplantation. Additionally, mother-to-child (vertical) transmission can occur; if the mother has an STI, the infant is at high risk of infection during vaginal delivery.
