Pain on the medial side of the knee joint is primarily caused by bursitis. Palpation elicits severe pain, and topical application of ketoprofen gel to the affected area may be helpful. Pain localized to the knee joint space is often associated with injury to the medial meniscus or medial collateral ligament. Local color Doppler ultrasound and MRI examinations are required to establish a definitive diagnosis. Alternatively, the pain may stem from degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) of the knee, which typically worsens with walking and improves with rest.
