Dr. Zhang Jianbin
When large amounts of pericardial effusion accumulate, symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, and peripheral edema (e.g., swelling in the limbs) may occur. Patients should seek evaluation at a hospital’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, where the underlying cause of the effusion can be actively treated to reduce its production and promote gradual absorption—ultimately leading to resolution of the effusion. However, in certain cases, pericardial effusion may develop rapidly over a short period, potentially posing an immediate threat to life.
