I have had hyperthyroidism for several years, but I’m unsure whether this condition is contagious. I’m very worried about possibly infecting my child. Could you please clarify whether hyperthyroidism is contagious or hereditary?

Dr. Pan Yongyuan
Hyperthyroidism is generally neither contagious nor hereditary; however, most patients exhibit familial clustering, and their offspring have a higher risk of developing hyperthyroidism compared with the general population. This condition—also known as thyrotoxicosis—is an endocrine disorder characterized by excessive synthesis and release of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, leading to systemic hypermetabolism and overexcitability. When one parent in a couple has hyperthyroidism, their children tend to exhibit increased sensitivity to thyroid autoantigens.
