Patients with Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism should avoid intentionally consuming iodine-rich foods. Both excessive and insufficient iodine intake may impair thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion. If the hypothyroidism is definitively caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, levothyroxine (e.g., Synthroid) should be supplemented appropriately based on laboratory test results. Pregnant women with this condition who fail to promptly supplement thyroid hormone are at increased risk of transmitting the disorder to their offspring; therefore, regular thyroid function monitoring is essential throughout pregnancy.
