Should women with type 2 diabetes undergo an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during pregnancy?
Disease description:
My daughter-in-law recently became pregnant, but she has type 2 diabetes. Is an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) required for pregnant women with type 2 diabetes?
Women with pregestational type 2 diabetes do not require an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during pregnancy, as this test is intended for screening women without preexisting diabetes prior to conception. When gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is diagnosed, consuming large amounts of sugary water—as required in the OGTT—may worsen the mother’s underlying glucose metabolism. Management primarily involves diabetes education and lifestyle interventions; pharmacologic glucose-lowering therapy may be added when necessary.
