Is there a link between major depressive disorder and hypothyroidism?
Disease description:
Today, I visited a relative’s home to see a patient with severe depression. During our conversation, it came up that the patient also has hypothyroidism. I’d like to ask—Is there a relationship between severe depression and hypothyroidism?
Severe depression is associated with hypothyroidism because thyroid hormones influence arousal and metabolism; excess thyroid hormone can lead to irritability and emotional instability, thereby contributing to anxiety and depression. Hyperthyroidism may exacerbate or even trigger depression and anxiety. Although these two conditions are not inherently related, they do exhibit a certain degree of association. Once thyroid function is normalized, these symptoms gradually subside.
