The sweet taste in the mouth experienced by some individuals with diabetes is due to elevated glucose levels in saliva. When blood glucose rises, it may—depending on the degree of elevation—increase urinary glucose excretion and/or glucose concentration in saliva. Some highly sensitive patients may perceive a sweet taste in their mouth; however, this phenomenon is relatively uncommon. Patients should minimize consumption of refined grains such as white rice and white flour. If these foods must be consumed, they should avoid fermented wheat-based products like noodles.
