Is elevated lipoprotein(a) considered hyperlipidemia?
Disease description:
What does elevated lipoprotein(a) mean? I’ve never heard of this term before—how serious is it? Is elevated lipoprotein(a) the same as hyperlipidemia?
Elevated lipoprotein(a) is not synonymous with hyperlipidemia. Patients require immediate treatment; otherwise, conditions such as myocardial infarction may develop. Lipoprotein(a) levels reflect the severity of atherosclerosis, and persistently elevated levels are strongly associated with increased incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular events. Moreover, elevated lipoprotein(a) promotes atherosclerosis, inhibits fibrinolysis, and enhances thrombosis formation—thus, higher levels correlate with greater cardiovascular risk and warrant appropriate clinical attention.
