Disease description:

I often experience generalized fatigue and excessive sweating, and I’m concerned that I might have hyperthyroidism. I’m considering going to the hospital for a non-invasive prenatal DNA test (NIPT). Can NIPT detect hyperthyroidism?

Non-invasive prenatal DNA testing generally cannot detect hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is primarily caused by overactivity of the thyroid gland and is diagnosed by measuring thyroid hormone levels to assess disease severity; it is an endocrine disorder. In contrast, non-invasive DNA testing is a prenatal screening method used to detect chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus and assess the risk of fetal structural anomalies.
