Hypokalemia typically leads to diminished bowel sounds, usually resulting from either reduced potassium intake or excessive potassium loss. Intestinal adhesions are another possible cause and require prompt treatment to prevent disease progression. Once the underlying cause is clearly identified, standardized, symptom-directed therapy should be initiated. Patients may also improve through oral potassium chloride supplementation. It is recommended that the patient visit a hospital for a comprehensive evaluation.
