Is elevated lipoprotein(a) considered hyperlipidemia?
Disease description:
My cousin has recently been experiencing frequent dizziness. After visiting the hospital for a blood test, she was found to have elevated lipoprotein(a) levels, raising suspicion of hyperlipidemia. Is elevated lipoprotein(a) considered hyperlipidemia?
Elevated lipoprotein(a) levels indicate an increased likelihood of hyperlipidemia in the patient. Markedly elevated lipoprotein(a) suggests impaired hepatic metabolism, which is not necessarily caused by hyperlipidemia itself; conversely, hyperlipidemia can lead to elevated lipoprotein(a) levels. Immediate treatment is required. Hyperlipidemia is a common condition that typically produces no specific symptoms; however, it promotes atherosclerosis, thereby increasing the risk of myocardial infarction.
